A birdie at the final hole gave Anthony Houston a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Fiji International.

Houston, 24, tops a leaderboard dominated by Australians after carding a seven-under 65 at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course on Thursday.

His only blemish came at the par-five fifth hole with a bogey, as six birdies and an eagle saw him into the lead.

Houston is a shot clear of Stephen Leaney and Jake Higginbottom, who opened with 66s.

Jason Norris, Damien Jordan, Matthew Giles, Aaron Pike and Aaron Wilkin share fourth at five under.

Local hero Vijay Singh, a three-time major champion, enjoyed a solid opening round, firing a two-under 70.

The 53-year-old was left to rue bogeys on holes five and 16, sitting in a tie for 19th after the first round.

Australian Steven Jeffress, the inaugural champion of the event in 2014, carded an even-par 72.

Meanwhile, New Zealander Vaughan McCall endured a torrid round and was disqualified when 32 over through 17 holes.

McCall's round included scores of 12 and 10 and the fifth and sixth holes, both par fives, although there was brief respite with a birdie at the eighth.
