Etixx – Quick Step dethroned BMC Racing by taking gold in the elite men's team time trial at the 2016 UCI Road World Championships on Sunday.

BMC have won the event at each of the two previous editions but were unable to complete a hat-trick in Doha, with Etixx becoming the first team to win a third world title in the event.

Etixx went out ahead of BMC and set a time split of 15 minutes and 11 seconds at the first checkpoint, with the defending champions three seconds slower.

However, it was all-square at 27 minutes and 56 seconds through the second split, with both teams chasing the time of 43 minutes and nine seconds set by Orica-BikeExchange, who ended up third.

Marcel Kittel led Etixx across the line after 42 minutes and 32 seconds, and, despite the efforts of Rohan Dennis, BMC crossed 12 seconds slower to hand Etixx the title and their 53rd win in 2016.

Lizzie Deignan and Evelyn Stevens were part of the comprehensive win for Boels Dolmans in the women's event.

Deignan secured her first medal in the team time trial, while it was a fourth gold for Stevens, but her first with this team.

The Dutch outfit produced a dominant display to oust defending champions Canyon-SRAM by 48 seconds, with Cervelo Bigla taking third despite finishing one minute and 57 seconds slower.
