Canterbury overcame a scare to win the Ranfurly Shield with a 29-23 Mitre 10 Cup victory at Waikato.

The reigning Premiership champions made it six wins from seven matches, but had to do it the hard way after the hosts pulled themselves level in the second half.

Two late Jordie Barrett penalties ultimately made the difference, leaving Waikato winless in three.

The hosts underlined their threat early on, Jordan Manihera's try eclipsing Richie Mo'unga's penalty, though he kicked another to restore Canterbury's lead.

That advantage was stretched further courtesy of Ben Funnell's score, with Johnny McNicholl getting in on the act after Whetu Douglas had crossed for Waikato.

Leading 20-12 at the break, Scott Robertson's men allowed Waikato back into it in the second half with a pair of Jordan Trainor kicks and Ratuva Tavuyara's try, which followed another Barrett penalty, levelling things up.

But Trainor missed the conversion and Barrett added two further three-pointers to wrap up a 15th Ranfurly Shield for Canterbury.
