NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg would like to see Kieran Foran make his return, but said it would take some time to reach a decision.

Foran has signed a one-year deal with the New Zealand Warriors for next season, just months after quitting the NRL.

Personal issues were behind the 26-year-old's decision to leave the Parramatta Eels, but Greenberg would welcome him back.

"Everyone agrees, me included, that I'd love to see Kieran Foran back on the field in the National Rugby League," Greenberg told Triple M on Saturday.

"But we also have a duty to ensure that, in the best interest of both the player and the broader game, for him to return there's a number of things we'll be expecting to talk to him about and to be seeing.

"It's now a matter for the integrity unit to work through that process with Kieran and now with the Warriors and we'll do that.

"I don't anticipate that'll take a short period of time, I'd say that'll take some time for us to be comfortable to make that decision on his contract."

Greenberg said the focus was on Foran's wellbeing and the playmaker would only be registered if the NRL felt he was ready to return.

"We've said, and I've said, consistently that I've always made it the priority that I think the first thing we need to do with Kieran is get him into a good place," he said.

"Let's be fair, it's only been a couple of months since he quit the game so we as a game would want to be very sure that he's overcome all of the issues which dragged him out of the game in the first place.

"In addition, I think there's some other off-field matters which need to be worked through before we would consider registering that contract."
