The right-hander, who had been on the DL since August 22, left Wednesday's contest against the Atlanta Braves with one out in the third inning after striking out Mike Foltynewicz.

Strasburg then threw a wild pitch, grimaced in pain, and was eventually taken out of the game after a meeting with an athletic trainer.

He had thrown just 42 pitches.

Strasburg was placed on the disabled list last month for precautionary measures after experiencing soreness in his throwing elbow.

He has had a problem with injuries throughout his career, including needing Tommy John surgery in 2010.

There were no immediate official updates provided on the nature of Strasburg's injury.
