Tiger Woods enters the 2015 Open Championship as the 241st ranked golfer, but that has not dampened his spirits.

The former world number one was asked by BBC Sport if he believes he can win this week, and he responded with an adamant, "Absolutely".

Woods has not won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, but he has had success at the Old Course at St. Andrews in the past and is pleased with the way his game is shaping up.

"I wouldn't say I've found the solution - it's a process, an evolution, making subtle shifts, fine tuning and getting the overall pattern different, and that takes time," Woods said via BBC Sport.

"I'm starting to feel like I'm getting more consistent. The last round at [the] Greenbrier [Classic] was probably the best I've hit it in a couple of years.

"I know I'm heading in the right direction. It's going take a tremendous amount of work and a lot of patience but I'll get there eventually."

Woods won The Open at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005, becoming just the fifth player to win two Open Championships there.

Needless to say, he is a fan of the course.

"It's my favourite golf course in the world," Woods said. "I love coming back here and seeing it and remembering all the shots and remembering all the good times I've had here.

"The creativity that it takes and the discipline, people don't realise how much you need to shape the ball and the discipline it takes to play this course."

Some changes have been made to the Old Course.

Woods, like many other competitors, was surprised at just how soft the course was playing in practice rounds.

"I was shocked," Woods said, via CBS Sports.

"I had seen photos of it a month ago. It was bone dry. It looked like it was going to be one of those dust bowls again - hard, fast, like the years I've played St. Andrews. It's changed. They got big rain and a lot of sun. It's totally changed.

"I'm going to have to do a little bit of feel around the greens, my putting. I wasn't expecting the firmness to be that soft. We made ball marks on the greens. I don't ever remember making ball marks around this place."
