Millennium Marathon owes 13 winners from 2016 event

The organisers of the race failed to explain terms and conditions to participants.

The Millennium Marathon

It all began with an expose from website Ghanasportsonline.com which accused the organiser, Mr. Ashin Morton of failing to deliver prizes to participants of the 2016 version of the event almost nine months after the event was staged.

Lariba Sakat, a Ghanaian female athlete who won the top prize of Gh25, 000 (Twenty Five Thousand Ghana Cedis) and a brand new Peugeot car also led the charge.

“When we visited the Millennium Marathon office, myself and Malik (another winner) Mr. Ashin Morton, ( the main organizer) gave us an undertaken which stated that we were supposed to use the car for only a year and that anytime we were to travel outside Accra with the car, we needed to seek permission from him. But we rejected it because I live in Bolgatanga, besides that was not the original agreement prior to the event. Before the event, we were told we will keep the cars for good,” Lariba said.

Speaking to Pulse.com.gh, the Event Director and a managing partner of the Millennium Marathon board, Katherine Morton confirmed prizes were indeed outstanding and blamed sponsors and miscommunication for the debacle.

"We owe 13 winners from last year's event but we are working hard to pay them and we have explained to them. Sponsors who in the first year delivered on time struggled to raise funds to pay us as promised and that has led to some difficulty for us."

Responding to allegations surrounding the Peugeot cars, Ms.Morton admitted that as organisers they had failed in not clarifying the terms and conditions to winners.

"We told all participants that there were terms and conditions but we did not explain to them in detail exactly what these terms were."
