CAS to announce Sharapova ruling in October

The Court of Arbitration for Sport will announce its decision on the Maria Sharapova doping case "during the first week of October".

Maria Sharapova will discover in the first week of October whether her two-year doping ban will be reduced, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced.

Sharapova is the subject of a suspension that runs until January 2018, after testing positive for banned substance meldonium at this year's Australian Open.

The former world number one claimed to be unaware that meldonium had been added to WADA's prohibited list at the start of 2016 and duly appealed to CAS.

A ruling had been expected in July, but "scheduling conflicts" forced a delay and CAS will now announce its verdict next month.

A statement on Tuesday from the independent authority read: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will issue its decision in the arbitration procedure between Maria Sharapova and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) during the first week of October 2016.

"On 9 June 2016, Maria Sharapova filed an appeal against the decision issued on 6 June 2016 by a tribunal appointed by the ITF.

"In her appeal to the CAS, Ms Sharapova seeks a reduction of the tribunal's decision to sanction her with a two-year period of ineligibility further to an anti-doping rule violation."
