Former world number one Wozniacki has struggled with injuries during 2016, slipping to 74th in the rankings after first-round exits at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while she had to sit out the French Open with an ankle issue.

However, at Flushing Meadows the unseeded Dane made it to her first major semi-final since 2014, though Kerber proved too strong in a comfortable 6-4 6-3 win on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But despite her exit, Wozniacki remained upbeat and hopes to carry her form into the final stretch of the season.

"Well, obviously right now I'm a little disappointed not to win, but at the end of the day it's been a good tournament, something I can be proud of," she said.

"I came into this tournament ranked 74 in the world and probably people ruled me out, but it's nice to prove people wrong once again.

"It's nice to have a good run. I did my best out there today. I fought all I could, and just came up a bit short.

"I think I just need to keep going the way I have been doing. You know, just I have gotten a lot of matches here, which is great. Hopefully I can just bring this momentum into the Asian swing.

"It was a good tournament. I kind of felt like the way I have been practicing I managed to put that into the matches, so that was nice. Hopefully I can just do that moving forward.

"I feel very good body-wise. I think it's the best it's felt in a while. I'm happy with that. Mentally I'm sure it will take me a couple of days just to process everything, but at the end of the day I can be proud of the way I have been handling myself these two weeks."
