Father leaves Black Stars decision to Manchester United player

Timothy Fosu-Mensah's father talks about the possibility of his son playing for the Black Stars of Ghana and confirms Avram Grant has made contact

The 18-year-old can play for the Netherlands or the Black Stars of Ghana at international level.

Fosu-Mensah’s father talked on his son’s background in an interview with Kumasi based Angel FM saying:

“He [Timothy Fosu-Mensah] is my biological son. Fosu-Mensah was born in Holland. He was my second child in Holland. He started playing football in the country at the age of six for some amateur clubs.

“He was scouted at the age of six by Ajax. He played for the Netherlands club for eight years before he was spotted by Manchester United who took him in 2014.

On football being a trademark in their family or not, Fosu-Mensah’s father said:

“I haven’t played that much but football is in the family. I was a sprinter.”

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s father confirmed the player was not promoted to the Manchester United first team from the Red Devils’ academy team as rumours have had it.

On news relating to Timothy Fosu-Mensah playing for the Black Stars with coach Avram Grant set to meet him, the Manchester United player’s father said:

“I had a strange call from Avram Grant. I did not pick up the call but later received a text and saw it was Grant.”

Fosu-Mensah’s father said the Black Stars coach has not made contact again but wants his son to focus on developing his football as he is still young.

“He is now 18 years of age. He is still developing and the pressure from agents and others are too much. He can’t even concentrate.

“Until the time is right, he has to focus on the football. He is now at a developing stage. For now, it is too early.

“But on deciding his future, I have already told him we are from Ghana. He knows. He’s been in Ghana too. He was born in Holland, and plays in England so whatever he chooses and thinks is good, I have nothing to say. All we want is the best for him. Football is played everywhere so no problem.

“We all know at 18 years of age, you can’t force your child to do anything with force abroad.”

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s father confirmed the player speaks Dutch, Twi and English.
