Lionel Messi's strike wins UEFA Goal of the Season award

Lionel Messi has won the UEFA Goal of the Season award for a brilliantly worked strike against Roma in the Champions League.

The goal was the product of an impressive passing sequence in which every Barcelona player appeared to get at least one touch of the ball, before the trident of Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar linked up to give the Catalans a 2-1 lead in a group stage match that would finish 6-1.

However, Lionel Messi missed out on the final three short-listed players for the UEFA Player of the Year award: Cristiano Ronaldo won the gong ahead of Antoine Grieizmann and Gareth Bale.

But the 29-year-old can console himself with having seen off Xherdan Shaqiri's spectacular overhead kick against Poland in the Euro 2016 round of 16, as well as the superb solo strike produced by Saul Niguez as Atletico Madrid defeated Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals.
