Burkina Faso defender punches opponent with brutal right hook

Horrific footage shows Burkina Faso defender Steeve Yago smashing a Botswana opponent in face during AFCON qualifier

There are a number of things you can get away with as a defender; a sneaky pull on a shirt, leaning on a shoulder for added leverage, and, in the lower leagues, you’ll even spot defenders using studs to stop opponents jumping by stamping on the back of their boots.

One thing you absolutely cannot get away with, however, is punching an opponent in the face.

Despite that, Burkina Faso and Toulouse defender Steeve Yago still gave it a very good go during his nation’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Botswana.

With the score locked at 1-1 and his nation on the verge of elimination, it obviously all got a bit too much for Yago as he attempted to dispossess a Botswana player.

The two came together very briefly before Yago took exception to something and opted to throw a pretty brutal right hook at his opponent, who immediately hit the deck.

The referee immediately showed Yago a deserved red card as Burkina Faso looked to be heading for elimination. But in the 99 minute they somehow grabbed an unlikely winner to qualify and spare Yago’s blushes.
