The pope, who has hailed the ability of Internet to “to build a society which is healthy and open to sharing,” had a private meeting with Instagram founder and CEO, Kevin Systrom last month. He has also had other meeting with other top tech execs like Eric Schmidt and Tim Cook.
According to Systrom's Instagram account, they talked about the power of images to bring people together across social boundaries, but media reports don't say if they discussed opening a papal Instagram account.
The Vatican currently has a verified Instagram account with around 78,900 followers. If Pope Francis does launch his own account, it may help kill off the many accounts posing as His Holiness on the photo-sharing social media platform.
The pope's Twitter page was launched in 2012 and currently has 9.87 million followers.
