The first ever Boeing 727 flight will take its final flight today Tuesday March 1st from Paine Field to Boeing Field International, both in Washington state.

The plane which made its maiden voyage over 50 years ago, having come  out of the factory on November 27, 1962, took its first flight from Renton Field to Paine Field on February 9, 1963.

It worked as a test vehicle for a year until it was delivered to United Airlines on October 6, 1964, where the aircraft stayed until it was retired in 1991.

Following its farewell trip, the Boeing 727 plane  will go on permanent display at the Museum of Flight, Boeing Field where it will help kick off Boeing's centennial celebration at the museum.

During its 27-year career, the plane flew 64,495 hours, made 48,060 landings and carried an estimated 3 million passengers

The plane, which was designed specifically for smaller airports and shorter runways, didn't attract much initial interest, so to help spur sales, Boeing sent the 727 on an international 76,000 mile tour.

Boeing continued producing 727s until 1984 and a total of 1,832 planes were made, making it the first commercial airplane to break the 1,000-sales mark.
