Election amendment bill failure won't affect Dec.7 polls - EC

Parliament on Thursday rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2016 to change the month of voting from December 7 to November 7.

The Electoral Commission has said the failure of parliament to pass the Constitutional Amendment Bill to change the month of voting from December 7 to the first Monday of November in an election wouldnt affect this years election.

In a statement signed by the head of communications Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, the EC said: "As an institution mandated to run elections in Ghana, we have ready for the November 7 elections if the Amendment Bill had been approved by parliament."

"The change of date to December 7 will therefore not affect out commitment to deliver a free, fair , transparent and credible election this year."

Parliament on Thursday rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2016 to change the month of voting from December to November.

The bill could not get the backing of 184 Members of Parliament.

125 MPs voted for the bill while 97 voted against it.

The commission also urged "Ghanaians to take advantage of the exhibition exercise currently ongoing in all the 29,000 polling stations across the country to check the correctness of their details on the Voters' Register and get their fingerprints verified to vote on December 7. "
