Ghanaian defender
His stats at the Bundesliga outfit that season made him the standout left back in the league and much was expected of the Ghana international under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. Why then did it go so wrong for Rahman?
The Black Stars full-back made 15 appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit in his debut season at the club created 3 chances, had a shot accuracy of 40 percent, an average pass accuracy of 83 percent, won 45 percent of duels and made two defensive errors.
Baba Rahman was not a Jose Mourinho signing
Then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho never wanted the former Asante Kotoko defender. For the Portuguese coach, Alex Telles of Galatasaray was the player he preferred in his left-back position. Baba Rahman was a player who was admired by Director of Football Michael Emenalo who saw in the young Ghanaian, a chance to load up on another talented player to add to Chelsea's already large talent farm and he won out over Jose.
Chelsea wasn’t the right upgrade
Some opportunities come in life but once. Notwithstanding, Baba Rahman’s upgrade from Augsburg to Chelsea was not the right decision.
The Ghanaian defender had a superb season before joining the English Premier League but Chelsea was a step too big.

The Stamford Bridge outfit were the Premier champions prior to Rahman’s transfer and the stakes were high for Jose going into his third season. Sadly for Rahman he did not get the cuddled start he expected due to Chelsea' horrible start to the league and as every game became a must win,the scrutiny of his performances became greater. He would have no room for error.
Physicality of the English Premier League
Let’s face it, getting the minimum physicality requirement for the English Premier League is hard. We’ve seen players who perform so well in France and Spain gasp for breath after sixty minutes of Premier League football.
Rahman was a victim early on as he struggled to balance his defensive duties with the hurly burly approach of his new league.Too many wingers man handled him. The game against Stoke City is one he will like to forget in a hurry as Xerdan Shaquiri and Marco Arnautovic had their way with him time and time again.
Swung between Average and Mediocre
Two games in the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League  come to mind when talking about how inconsistent Abdul Baba Rahman was during his time at Chelsea.
The Ghanaian defender was superb for the Premier League outfit against Paris Saint Germain and took Ghana's Twitter space to a whole new level of explosion.

Fast forward a few weeks forward against Southampton and it was a nightmare. The Ghanaian defender looked out of his depth as Southampton bombarded Chelsea. Hiddink hauled him off at half time.  .
There is no doubt that Rahman is a talented player who could become of the best full back in world football.Hopefully Schalke gives him an opportunity to show Chelsea fans what could have been.
