Ghana needs $7 billion to resurrect railway sector - Minister

Much of Ghana’s railway lines were built during British colonial administration, which ended 60 years ago.

The Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey has said that the country would need about 7 billion dollars in order to resurrected the railway industry.

The minister made the statement at a meeting with the Ghana Railway Workers Union in Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region.

The city is home to the headquarters of the struggling Ghana Railway Company Limited which manages the railway sector in the country.

According to Joe Ghartey, the money will be pumped into constructing 1,400 kilometre long railway lines across the country. This would include a line between Accra and Kumasi, a western line from Takoradi to Kumasi and a line from Kumasi to Paga, which has been dubbed as the Single Spine.

“He said the ministry had received a lot of enquiries from both local and foreign investors on how they could partner the government to turn the fortunes of the railway sector around and gave an assurance that the government would be transparent in all the processes to make the sector a viable one,” Graphic Online reports.
