On 20th September, 1975 David Kotei Poison became the first Ghanaian to win a world title in boxing.

He won the WBC featherweight title by a split decision victory over over Ruben Olivares at the forum in Inglewood, California.
The Ghanaian defended the belt three times – he defeated David Sotelo, Flipper Uehara and Shig Fukuyama.
Before unfortunately he lost it belt to Danny Lopez via a unanimous decision on November 6, 1976 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
