Govt appeals after court grants teachers 60 per cent pay rise

Cabinet Secretary, Jacob Kaimenyi, revealed the decision after meeting the National Assembly Committee on Education.

He said the ministry is reviewing the judgment and reserves the right to go to court to seek more time to comply with the decision.

"If we feel dissatisfied as a government we can also seek recourse in the court of law," Kaimenyi said.

"We have a right to appeal whether as an individual or institution.

"We can do that and there is no crime in that."

He said the government does not have the funds to meet such a pay rise.

The Education CS noted that the government plans to increase their pay in the future.

"We are looking at the economic situation and we will be asking if we will be able to pay.

"It's possible that a fraction of the funds are available and it could also be that it is the funds are not available."

Kaimenyi's position is certain to reopen hostilities between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the government.
