The 30-year-old, who missed the last three games with an illness, was unhurt after his car skidded into the central reservation of the M1 motorway on Monday.
Mertesacker was driving home from training during a torrential downpour when he lost control of his vehicle.
An eye witness to the accident told the Mirror: “Per was sitting looking shaken alongside cops on M1 near the Bricket Wood/Watford turnoff after a car crash.”
No one else was in the car alongside the former Germany international, who is expected to return to training later this week.
