One of the most astute private universities in the country, Catholic University of Ghana (CUG) is near collapse as reports say the institution is drowning in financial crisis.
According to reports by the Daily Guide Newspaper, administrative staff, workers, and lecturers of the University have allegedly not been paid for the past three months due to the school’s inefficiency to pay them.
The financial state of the university has taken a turn for the worst with some teaching staff being laid off while others have voluntarily resigned to salvage the school from completely collapsing.

The derail of the university some members of the school say is because of the dictatorial leadership of its Vice Chancellor.
Eight lecturers who have been laid off without service benefits are threatening to go to court if the institution fails to pay them their salaries spanning three months, plus end-of-service benefits by the end of this month.
However, Professor Obeng-Ofori contested that none of the lecturers had been sacked, but most of them have ended their tenures office. He added that since the university has a higher number of professors, their contracts could not be renewed.
According to him, the school’s financial turmoil is because of mismanagement that dates back to 2012, years before he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the university.
“Again, because of some people’s gains, dubious contracts were entered into, putting a financial burden on the institution; so I had to abrogate some of the contracts which we are trying to pay now,” he bemoaned.
He also said that the authorities of the university are reaching out to seek funds to sustain it.
