Design experts say these will be the biggest trends in American homes in 2017

Houzz, the home-decorating and renovation site and social network for homeowners and designers, put together a list of what they think will be the biggest design trends of 2017. The site's editorial team talked to industry leaders and drew conclusions from user behavior to determine what elements they think will be popular in the new year.

Black steel and glass doors can serve several purposes, and they're showing up in many homes across America. They keep entryways from getting too dark, and add some interest to shower doors.

Laundry rooms are quickly becoming an area where homeowners are willing to invest extra design dollars, Houzz says. Common upgrades include adding more efficient storage space and maximizing natural light.

Designers are rethinking how they use beige. Several different shades of the neutral color are being incorporated into homes.

Romantic bedroom colors like deep ruby red, raspberry, caramel, and black will be popular in 2017. According to a recent Houzz survey, "intimate or romantic" is the third-most desirable vibe when it comes to master bedrooms, after "calming" and "cozy."

And when it comes to the kitchen, the color white is in. Wood accents help keep the look from becoming too boring or sterile.

Additionally, warm wood cabinets of all different tree species are having a moment. Go for something clean-lined and modern.

Lots of homeowners are choosing a more bold look in their kitchen, going for a full wall of tile rather than a traditional backsplash.

Constructing an island in a contrasting color is also becoming popular, as it helps to break up that all-white kitchen look. Some are even taking it a step further and buying a refrigerator in the same color as the island.

Hexagonal backsplash tiles are an upgrade to the classic subway tile look.

Houzz design experts encourage thinking outside of the box. If you don't have a traditional vanity, consider converting a chest of drawers or old file cabinet into bathroom storage.

Houzz says that modern bar stools are some of the most commonly bought items in its online store. Along with cabinet hardware and faucets, they're the "new jewelry of the kitchen."
