The drinks were seized because they had no tax stamps affixed on them. The 2 hotels are Kempinski Gold Coast and Movenpick Hotels both located in the country’s capital.

The GRA started visiting retail outlets to inspect the stamps on their products. The Head of the Task Force for at the GRA, Kwabena Apau Anto, has indicated that hotels and restaurants in the country will also be monitored to ensure that they comply.

About Tax Stamp

The Tax Stamp Policy was introduced by the government to check smuggled goods and also rake in the needed revenue for the state.

This is in accordance with the Provisions of the Excise Tax Stamp Act, 2013 (Act 873) specified excisable products which are imported or locally produced, are required to be affixed with Tax Stamps with specific features designed and supplied by the Ghana Revenue Authority before they are delivered ex-factory, cleared from any port of entry or presented for sale at any commercial level in Ghana.

To ensure this is effective all importers and manufacturers of the affected products are required to register with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

However, key business associations have opposed the tax stamp. They argue that they are unable to bear the additional cost of fixing the stamps.

But the GRA insists the policy is necessary to stop tax evasion.
