This follows a meeting with a group of journalists where the Director General disclosed that the highest pension earner in Ghana takes home about $11,000 every month.

In a response to a question posed to him, the Director indicated that the pension paid monthly is regulated by an act of Parliament, and the same Act of Parliament also determines the end-of-service earnings for contributors.

He said, “I as Director General cannot change what is legitimately due [a pensioner] arbitrarily,” adding that “the highest earner contributed for so long so he earned the full pension right,”

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang also revealed that, SSNIT paid GH¢2.2 billion to 189,549 pensioners and other beneficiaries in 2017 as compared to GH¢1.7 billion payment to 174,164 pensioners and other beneficiaries in 2016, representing an increase of 29.41 per cent.

He then said pension payments had been increased by 10 per cent in 2018, and the minimum pension was above the statutory monthly minimum wage for workers.

SSNIT in a later development has trimmed the payroll as the entity term the names it removed as “ghost names.”
