After a three-month extension due to the coronavirus pandemic, federal income taxes are finally due by the end of the day on Wednesday, July 15.

If that's too soon, you can get an extension to push your due date back to October 15. But if you owe money, your bill is still due on Wednesday. Failing to file and pay on time means you face penalties and interest charges. Take note that many state income tax returns are also due on July 15.

The IRS recommends e-filing your tax return it's quicker and safer than going the pen-and-paper route. Luckily, about 70% of US taxpayers qualify to prepare and file their tax return for free online , including most active military members.

You might not qualify for free tax filing if you have a complicated tax situation that includes any combination of multiple jobs, mortgage interest, investment income, dependents, or self-employment earnings.

Anyone who hasn't filed taxes solo before, isn't comfortable navigating any level of tax jargon, or recently experienced significant life changes would benefit from the guidance H&R Block provides.
  • TaxAct : 35% off
  • Federal + 1 state return: $90 - $126
  • Federal only: $35 - $71
  • Named Business Insider's best tax software for experienced filers. TaxAct is a good middle-of-the-road option: It's cheaper than the industry stalwarts and still gets the job done. Independent contractors may get more value with the self-employed option, which spends extra time identifying industry-specific deductions.
  • TaxSlayer : 25% off
  • Federal + 1 state return: $42 - $64
  • Federal only: $13 - $35
  • TaxSlayer is cheaper than competing tax software and is best for people who either have a simple tax situation or are already comfortable with the e-filing process and don't need immediate access to customer service.
  • eFile.com : 25% off
  • Federal + 1 state return: $40 - $55
  • Federal only: $19 - $34
  • Named Business Insider's best tax software for small business owners. Efile.com is good for individual filers looking for simplicity and self-employed people who are familiar with howbusiness income tax filing works and don't need a ton of hand holding.

If you're expecting a refund , here's a tip: When you file your taxes online, you might have the option to pay those tax filing fees through your refund rather than imputing separate payment information don't fall for the convenience. Most online preparers charge an additional fee between $25 and $40 for this.

If you can, pay the prep and file fees with a rewards credit card instead. You'll earn points or cash back, avoid a service charge, and get your refund in full.
