Kenyan church where sinners go through hell to go to heaven

From the young to the old, the local faithfuls are routinely slapped or forced to kneel in repentance outside.

The self-styled prophetess does not entertain worshipers who fall foul of the church doctrine. From the young to the old, the local faithfuls are routinely slapped or forced to kneel in repentance outside.

Akatsa scrutinises her congregation and pounces on a worshipper at the first whiff of "sin."

Periodically, she tends to pull a worshipper from the file, declaring him or her a sinner and order them to kneel some distance from the huge open steel gate.

Congregants who come late for a church sermon are locked out. Service begins at 10am and anyone who arrives from 10.05am is locked out until the service ends at around 8pm.

“I arrived here at 10.30, just 30 minutes late and have to remain out till end of the service,” said a worshiper.

Allegiance

Prophetess Akatsa, fondly referred to as ‘Wa Mami’ is dressed in a white and green stripped T-shirt and long checked gathered skirt. She shot to global fame in June of 1988 after claiming that Jesus Christ had visited her church in Kawangware.

Faithfuls say they cannot change their allegiance despite her strict rules. Some travel every evening from as far as Mombasa to attend her church service.

The Jerusalem Church of Christ has no seats with Akatsa saying it is not indicated anywhere in the Bible that Jesus talked to people who sat on seats.

Temptation

“All Jesus’ followers sat down and listened to him," she stated.

Male and female worshippers do not sit together in her church. Akatsa alludes this to the fact that the men will be drawn to women and forget to follow the service.

“My church has beautiful women. They will make men forget the word of God,” explains the prophetess who punishes followers - mostly men - who cheat by making them carry their wives on their backs and walk in the open as people watch.

Her instant and rather painful punishment, she says, is biblical.
