Influenza A virus H1N1 kills over 7 students in Ghanaian high school

The numerous deaths sparked national outrage as authorities struggled to find out what caused the unfortunate incidence.

The flu has claimed over 7 lives in the Kumasi Academy high school located in the the Ashanti region of Ghana

Sources at the KNUST Hospital where majority of the affected students were transferred upon falling sick in school is reported to have said the many deaths are as a result of Influenza virus type A which causes the H1N1 flu.

Currently, students have been put on a cocktail of antibiotic medication administered free of charge to all students of the school including teachers and other non teaching staff.

Also people in the general population of Kumasi who have come into contact with sick Kumasi Academy students have been advised to proceed to the school premises to take part in the ongoing vaccination process.

The school is scheduled to shut down on Friday 8th December to allow for proper on site investigations by health authorities and WHO officials.
