A look at deposed African leaders and where they are now

After spending time in the political limelight, this is what the one-time Presidents are doing with their lives

These are what the following African former Presidents are doing after serving their terms.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – Liberia

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate said in an interview with South Africa’s Mail and Guardian that she plans to venture into lecturing, farming, and reading. She also hopes to read and sleep more.

Jakaya Kikwete – Tanzania

Jakaya Kikwete was Tanzania’s President from December 2005 to November 2015. The former President is currently into farming and recently tweeted how much he is enjoying his time with his family, cattle, and farm.

Thabo Mbeki – South Africa

Mr. Mbeki is currently the Chairperson of the AU High-Level Implementation Panel for Sudan. He has basically been doing diplomacy work for international organizations such as the AU and UN.

Jerry John Rawlings – Ghana

The charismatic leader and Ghana’s first president in the fourth republic has been active in public life since he handed over to John Agyemang Kufour in 2001, playing an active role in his party, the National Democratic Congress’ victory in the 2008 and 2012 elections.

Yahya Jammeh – The Gambia

After handing over to power to Adama Barrow in January 2017. There have been wide speculations of his return to farming after the former president was captured surveying a farmland.

Robert Mugabe - Zimbabwe

The 93-year-old has hinted that he will spend his time to write his memoir as well as other books he intends to document.

José Eduardo dos Santos – Angola

The former Angolan leader is expected to go back and manage his family’s business.

John Kufuor – Ghana

The former president was recently named the first Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa in the Western Region. He is working with his foundation, John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation, to build leadership capacity among African youth.

Olusegun Obasanjo – Nigeria

After handing over to Buhari, Obasanjo has still been walking on the corridors of politics. He has recently written an open letter to Mr. Buhari advising him against standing for the 2019 elections because of his ill health. It looks like the former president will still do politics, at least for the love of his country.

John Dramani Mahama - Ghana

The former Ghanaian president and chairman of the African Union has been his one year after to serve on special missions in other African countries during elections and conferences. He is also helping his political party to strategize for a comeback in the next general election
