Here’s how much it will cost to contest in Ghana’s next presidential elections

Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has decided that presidential aspirants of the party should pay$90,000.

This follows a consensus by the party’s national executive committee (NEC) to help reduce select a flagbearer for the party for the 2020 election in the country.

At a NEC meeting held today, November 29, the party agreed that aspirants for the aforementioned positions should pay an amount of $90,000 as filing fee.

Nonetheless, female aspirants will pay 50 per cent less $45,000 [GH¢200,000] of the fee whilst a reduction of about $30,500 (equivalent GH¢150,000) is made for aspirants with physical disabilities.

The party has agreed to hold the presidential primary on January 19, 2019.

Nomination process

The nomination will be opened on Monday, December 3 and Tuesday, December 4 and that aspirants who pick the nomination forms would have to file them on December 13 and 14.

The General Secretary of the party, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia explained that, each aspirant is supposed to get two people to endorse the nomination in each constituency.This means a total of 558 signatures are needed for each aspirant.

Also, there should be three proposers, five seconders and the qualification criteria is in line with what is recommended by 1992 constitution for the office of president except that an aspirant must be a member of the NDC for more 10 years and contributed to the building of the party.

A 7-member committee will then vet the aspirants and the winner would have to obtain valid votes of 50 per cent plus one and that proxy voting would not be entertained.

There will be a total of 276 voting centres across the country.
