6 schoolchildren killed while playing with grenade

Reports say the region hosts refugees from neighbouring Burundi, some of them ex-soldiers, who might have left their weapons in the area.

The pupils were said to be playing with a grenade they had found.

A doctor in charge at Rulenge hospital, Sister Maria Goreth Fredricks, told the BBC that three died at the time they arrived at the hospital while the others were wounded.

The school is in Kagera region near the border with Burundi.

The BBC reports that the region hosts refugees from neighbouring Burundi, some of them ex-soldiers.

There are fears that those ex-soldiers could have left their weapons in the area.

Meanwhile, a security team had been dispatched to the school in Kihinga village.
