The decision formed part of discussions at the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria's Acting President, on Thursday, August 16, 2018, in Abuja.

The National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, stated that the council will set up a committee to achieve its ways of decentralising the security agency.

He said the committee will be headed by the country's police chief, Ibrahim Idris, and will have representatives from the six geopolitical zones as members.

The committee is to find ways of decentralising police operations so that there will be greater access to information and make it less cumbersome in approach, he said.

On Tuesday, the acting president also directed the Police to "overhaul the management and activities" of the notorious Police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The order followed persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that border on allegations of human rights violations.
