The largest opposition party in Ghana wants more women in parliament

The opposition party in Ghana has called for an increase in the parliamentary seats which will solely be reserved for women to empower them in the country.

They want the number to rise from 275 to 300.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, who was speaking on issues on women empowerment in parliament today December 12, made the request.

According to him, the additional twenty-five seats that he is requesting for will be reserved solely for women.

He said, “Mr Speaker maybe today we have 275 seats in Ghana’s parliament, but we could decide to add additional twenty-five more seats by dedicating it solely to women,” adding that, “will reflect the size and strength of the political parties in parliament and help encourage women empowerment in the country.

Earlier this month, a former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs Nana Oye Lithur, called for appropriate legal and policy frameworks to ensure that all bottlenecks to the empowerment of women in Ghana are removed. This hence has called for the increments.

It is projected that if more seats are reserved for women in parliament, it will help strengthen the women empowerment agenda of the country.
