Eye witnesses said on Twitter that the blimp caught fire and crashed in the woods near where the US Open is being held in Wisconsin. Emergency responders were called on scene to attend to the pilot, who suffered injuries from the crash.

The pilot suffered serious burns and was taken to a local hospital via a medical helicopter, the Washington County Sheriff's Office told the Associated Press.

The blimp, which was showing an advertisement for PenFed, was being operated by AirSign, an aerial advertising firm, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"First responders were quick to arrive at the scene and the pilot is currently being treated for unknown injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot at this time," the statement continued.

Media representatives from the US Open and AirSign did not immediately return Business Insider's requests for comment.
