In our series of chronicling the footballers who went from riches to rag, we take a look these players.

Wilson Oruma

Former Nigerian international, Wilson Oruma is reportedly suffering from an emotional disorder after he  was allegedly defrauded by a pastor and some fake oil businessmen to the tune of N1.2 billion in December 2012.

The 41 year-old Oruma played for Lens, Marseille and Lens in France as well as other European clubs,

Ex-Super Eagles stars, Augustine Eguavoen, Samson Siasia and Nwankwo Kanu, have agreed to take part in a football game to raise funds for their former colleague, Wilson Oruma.

Philemon Masinga

This man rose to fame when he scored a goal that took South Africa to it’s World Cup in 1998. Aside being a player, he was a businessman too. But rags came knocking after he retires. The clear indication to that was when he moved from a mansion worth millions to a back room at his mother’s house in Soweto.

Steve Lekoelea

Steve "Chippa" Lekoelea is a South African football (soccer) midfielder who played for Premier Soccer League club Platinum Stars and South Africa. Right after he cut ties with all his clubs he went bankrupt. One may blame it on his early retirement but the truth behind is that all the money he saved while playing football was spent on parties. His glory was indeed short–lived.

Thembinkosi Fanteni

Fanteni loved the lavish life, he purchased all the high priced products from international brands. He also splurged his money on women and cars. Fanteni must have felt like he was dreaming all along when he realised that his bank balance was becoming imbalanced. Thembinkosi "Terror" Fanteni is a South African football striker. He was part of the South African squad at the 2008 African Nations Cup and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup

Junaid Hartley

Hartley went broke after he used all the money he made to in career to pay lawyers when he was attempting to cut ties with Orlando Pirates. He tried to revive his career but luck wasn't his friend.

Jabu Mahlangu

A man that grew up poor but got his big break when his talent for football gave him the life he envisioned. Mahlangu’s life of riches was short lived though, he used all the money on the party lifestyle. After his retirement he went broke, his luck didn’t run out though.

Emmanuel Eboue

Now ex-Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue spends his days hiding from bailiffs, sometimes sleeps on the floor of a friend’s home, travels by bus and even cleans his clothes by hand because he has no washing machine. Today, the 34-year-old tells how his staggering riches-to-rags plight has pushed him to the brink of suicide.
