Ghana’s Hanna Tetteh heads UN Office at AU

Miss Tetteh is taking over from Ms Sahle-Work Zewde, who vacated the position in October when she became the President of Ethiopia.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres has appointed a former Ghana Foreign Minister, Hanna Serwah Tetteh, as the Special Representative to the African Union.

Hanna Tetteh will also head the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, made this announcement on Monday (December 10, 2018).

In July this year, Ms Tetteh was appointed by the Secretary-General as the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).

Before this position, Ms Tetteh served in the cabinet of the Government of Ghana as Minister for Foreign Affairs and a member of the National Security Council and the Armed Forces Council (2013-2017), as well as Minister for Trade and Industry (2009-2013).

During her term as Minister for Trade and Industry, she was also served as a member of the Government’s economic management team, the board of the Millennium Development Authority and the National Development Planning Commission, and was also the Chairperson of the Ghana Free Zones Board.  From January to February 2009 she served as Spokesperson for President John Evans Atta Mills’ Administration transition team.

She is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She served as Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya Constituency from 2000 to 2005. She served again for the Awutu Senya West Constituency from 2013 to 2017.  She was appointed Co-Facilitator in the High-Level Forum for the Revitalisation of the Agreement for the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan (2017-2018).

Ms. Tetteh holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana, Legon.  She was called to the Ghana Bar in October 1992.
