On Tuesday (December 11, 2018) the Ghanaian Parliament approved an agreement to allow the use of drones to distribute blood and other medical essentials to health facilities across the country.

A head count was held on Tuesday (December 11, 2018) to approve the agreement by majority vote. 102 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted for the policy while 58 dissented.

There have been concerns raised by the Minority in Parliament as well as some Ghanaians over the cost involved and the priorities of the government.

Here are 7 things you should know about this contract

• The contract runs for 4 years

• Zipline is expected to build at least 4 distribution centres

• Operation of each centre will cost $88,000 per month

• The drones will deliver blood, essential drugs, vaccines within 1 hour of demand

• Each distribution centre is expected to deliver at least 150 drone flights daily

• The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) will cover the Health Ministry operational cost for the first year

• Aviation Authority is to create an air corridor for drones to prevent collisions
