Ghana will soon make senior secondary education compulsory

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that his government is working towards making Senior High School (SHS) Education compulsory.

He said that they are working on the necessary processes which will legalise the compulsory second-cycle education in the country.

In Ghana currently, it is only basic education which is compulsory under the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) policy.

The President was speaking at the Ga Central Municipal Assembly during his three-tour of the Greater Accra region.

He argued that if Ghana wants to develop, it must invest in its human capital and not rely solely on its natural resources such as gold, diamond, timber, and oil.

He explained further that this was the reason why his administration insisted on introducing the Free SHS which allowed over 300,000 children, who would have missed school, to gain access to education at the senior high level.

The biggest opposition party which was in power before the 2016 elections, argued that the free SHS campaign promise was not possible.

However, after the NPP government took office and implemented the programme, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that they would review the Free SHS if they are voted into power.
