Sur La Table just filed for bankruptcy and is closing more than 50 stores — here's the full list

Sur La Table filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, joining the mounting list of retailers seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The company, best known for its high-end kitchenware and cooking classes, will close more than 50 stores are part of the bankruptcy proceedings. It will continue to operate high-performing stores and plans to sell 70 of its locations to the private equity firm, Fortress Investments.

"This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post-COVID-19 retail environment," Jason Goldberger, CEO of Sur La Table said in a statement.

The Seattle-based company cut 20% of its workforce last month as a result of slumping sales due to the pandemic. The company has also been especially hard hit by the loss of its cooking classes and events, which have been halted or limited to prevent the spread of the virus.
