The years American Society of Mechanical Innovation Showcase contest has seen two Ghanaian scientists emerging as winners.

These two Ghanaians Charles Ofori Antipem and Michael Afrifa wowed panellists and other participants at the international engineering challenge with their innovations.

Charles Ofori Antipem and Michael Afrifa made it to the competition with a portable science lab in a form of a mathematical set which made them beat eight other pairs of contestants.

Their portable science lab known as the DEXT Science Set is similar to mathematical set and has basic science experiment tools.

The portable facility has an apparatus to facilitate understanding of science education from the basic level.

The American Society of Mechanical Innovation Showcase contest aims at solving social and environmental issues by establishing the most innovative idea.

Out of 30 finalists who appeared before the judges nine finalists were from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Ghana.

Participants were groomed by engineering experts on access to industry's best practice and contact with a global community of engineering experts.

The two Ghanaians winning the contests make them become part of the Innovative Showcase (ISHOW) alumni network, a global community of hardware innovators.

The highly scalable portable science laboratory by the Ghanaians fits into a bag and can be set up on a student’s desk.

Reports say due to the impressive nature of the Ghanaian innovation all the judges ended up purchasing one for personal use.

Charles Ofori Antipem is co-founder and representative of the group in Kenya.

According to him, initiative will address the difficulty associated with teaching and learning of science learning at the basic level.

The portable innovation by the two Ghanaians can be scaled to fit into a bag and can be set up on a student’s desk.

Hardware-led social innovation takes a physical product to market to solve a social or environmental problem, using sustainable business model.

It put emphasis on design and engineering journey of ventures.

They focus on eight themes, including

Water and sanitation, energy, environment as well as food and agriculture are part of the eight themes prioritised by the contest.

Nevertheless education, economic development and community empowerment as well as safety are given a high level of focus.
