Agrocenta, Lori Systems and SynCommerce, emerge winners in Techcrunch's first competitive event in Africa

Two Ghanaian startups have emerged winners at the Techcrunch Startup Battlefield African held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Two Ghanaian startups have emerged winners at the Techcrunch Startup Battlefield African held in Nairobi, Kenya.

In all, three startups were selected out of the initial 15 that entered the competition.

Being the first of it's Startup Battlefield in Africa, Techcrunch presented the participants with a chance to win win $25,000 and an all-expense paid trip for two to San Francisco to compete in TechCrunch’s flagship event — Disrupt SF 2018.

The three winners were picked across the three main thematic areas of the competition;

For the "productivity and utility" category, Kenya's Lori Systems emerged winner. Lori Systems is a logistics platform poised to optimize cargo transportation across Africa.

Beyond winning the "productivity and utility" category, the Nairobi-based startup was also named "Best of Show".

Asides the $25,000 equity-free fund, Lori Systems also won two all-expense paid tickets to compete at TechCrunch’s flagship event, Disrupt SF 2018, in San Francisco.

In addition, the winning startup gets to join the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Alumni Network which, according to TechCrunch, has collectively raised close to $7 billion and produced almost 100 exits and IPOs to date.

Ghana's "Agrocenta" took home the crown in the "social good" category. Led by Francis A. Obirikorang, Agrocenta is a startup which connects with over 8,000 farmers.

The startup helps to improve the agricultural value chain by cutting out the middlemen, optimize truck deliveries to large markets thanks to an online marketplace.

Another Ghanaian startup, SynCommerce won in the "gaming and entertainment" category. SynCommerce, coming from the Meltwater Incubator in Accra, empowers local merchants with listing their products on multiple e-commerce websites.

SynCommerce lets you list all your products on Shopify, eBay, Etsy, and soon BigCommerce and Amazon.
