Teacher trainee allowance to be disbursed through Students Loan Trust

The Akufo-Addo administration has issued a new directive to teacher trainees to register with the Ghana Students Loan Trust so as to qualify for their restored allowance.

The allowance will now be paid through the Student Loan Trust, according to the new directive seen by Pulse.com.gh.

The new directive is not clear as to whether students will be made to pay back the money through monthly salary deductions when they are employed as teachers.

“The directive from the minister of Education through the national council for tertiary education (NCTE) has directed that teacher trainees must register with the students loan trust fund. This requirement is for the payment of teacher trainee allowances for September 2017," a statement announcing the new directive said.

“It should be noted that allowances will be paid to teacher trainees only through the students loan trust fund. In view of the above directive, students must register with the students loan trust fund immediately.”

This latest move comes on the heels of the restoration of the quota system for the nursing training colleges.

Although the move has been welcomed by the major stakeholders in the health sector, the opposition National Democratic Congress has condemned the move.

They argue that it will limit access to education.
