Headmasters must be given ‘total autonomy’ – Prof Stephen Adei

The call was made by Professor Stephen Adei, the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Ashesi University College at a conference organised by alumni of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

“He said about 66 percent of basic education graduates were functionally illiterates and said no country could succeed with that foundation, and called for the heads to be empowered and held responsible for successes or otherwise at the basic level,” the Ghana News Agency reports.

He further called for a reduction in the number of examinable subjects to four; English Language, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science, adding that the rest could be studied for ‘fun’.
