Tamale, Ho students protest over allowances

In Tamale, the students, who were in their school uniforms with red arm bands around their heads, wrists and necks started the march from their school premises which is situated at the outskirts of the Tamale metropolis through the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway to the central business district (CBD) area to the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) where they presented their petition copied to the President to the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Salifu Saeed.

Some of the placards displayed by the students during the protest read: "Competent President, we want our allowance," "Prevention is better than cure so pay attention to hygiene students," "No Allowance No Hygiene" among others.

The students alleged that they haven’t been able to access their allowances which they needed to take care of their educational needs as well as other important issues since most of them did not have enough money to pay for their school fees.

According to the students, President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 election campaign promised to restore the allowances to trainees of all health training institutions including hygiene schools.

However, a petition signed by Mr Jacob Amanor, National President of the Association and Students Representative Council executives of Schools of Hygiene in Ho, Tamale and Accra, said they did not understand why students of the School of Hygiene should be sidelined in the payment of restored allowances despite engagements with stakeholders in August 2017 after which students’ particulars were processed for payments.
