It’s unconstitutional to take PTA dues – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned that it is unconstitutional to impose Parent Teacher Association (PTA) dues and levies in public schools which have the potential of denying any child access to basic education.

It’s unconstitutional to take PTA dues – GES

In a letter, the GES said its ban on PTA dues and levies is still in force in all public schools.

The letter, signed by the Director-General of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, stated that no school should deny any pupil access to education due to non-payment of PTA levies.

“Management of the GES wishes to make it clear that the suspension of imposition of dues/levies in all public schools is still in force and has not been lifted,” the letter reads.

It added: "The imposition of any dues/levies which has the potential of denying any child access to basic education shall be unconstitutional and any such imposition shall to the extent of it being contrary to the 1992 Constitution shall be null and void and of no effect.”

This comes after the National President of PTAs, Mr. Alexander Yaw Danso, announced that the collection of the dues is to resume following a suspension of the ban.

Mr. Danso had said that the decision was pursuant to meetings held between the Ministry of Education and executives of the Association.

However, GES has reiterated that the ban imposed on PTA dues and levies in public schools has not been lifted.
