Legon VC flays indiscipline students

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has charged students to be disciplined while pursuing for excellence.

He made the comment at the university’s annual matriculation ceremony to officially welcome fresh students to pursue various programs in the school’s Main and City campuses.

According to him, the increasing rate of misconduct by students is worrying. He expressed disappointment at how students have consistently defaced buildings with posters and destroyed other beautification projects.

“You cannot strive for excellence if you are not disciplined. We live in a civilised society and civility must reflect in all our actions… The university is trying very hard to provide our students with needed facilities. That is why we spend money on buying new equipment, paint our buildings so it looks good. If after we have done all these things, you fail to appreciate the enormity of the responsibility on you, if you fail to appreciate the beauty of the university, then you would have let us down,” he said.

“Four years ago, we spend a lot of money renovating various halls of residence. Today, you go to those halls and there is little evidence that we did. It is a very backward thing to do. I am appealing to you as a students, I’m begging you, if you find your mates putting posters on the doors, draw their attention to how costly it is for the university to renovate the facilities,” Professor Aryeetey added.

For the 2015/2016 academic year, the University admitted students into programmes on the Main Campus, the Korle Bu Campus, the Accra City Campus and Distance Learning and was able to offer admission to 18,106 applicants made up of 14,737 undergraduate and 3,369 graduate students.
