On Thursday, the GES unveiled the new uniforms to replace the popular brown and yellow khaki uniforms which were previously worn by JHS and primary pupils.

The change of the school uniform forms part of reforms in the educational sector announced by the government.

The Director-General of GES, Prof Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, said the new uniform was chosen by after a broader consultation.

He explained that the new uniform is primarily to distinguish the JHS pupils from their peers at the primary level.

“The minister through consultations, presented a memo to cabinet which was duly accepted for us to change the junior high school uniform,” Prof. Amankwa said at a press conference on Thursday.

“The idea is for them [JHS pupils] to start seeing themselves as secondary school students; they are in lower secondary [now],” he added.

Prof. Amankwah further disclosed that the cost of the uniforms will be paid by parents while the government will cater for that of those in deprived areas.

JHS pupils are expected to start wearing the new school uniform from next academic year, 2019-2020.
