Edu. Ministry warns parents, school heads against purchasing textbook

A ‘Natural Science for Primary Schools – Pupil’s Book 1,’ authored by Joseph Albert Quarm had stated the function of the head is for carrying loads.

Textbook depicting the head as ‘load carrier’

The Ministry of Education has cautioned heads of schools and parents to avoid purchasing the Natural Science textbook which depicted the head as a part of the human body used for carrying load.

In a statement, the Ministry said the textbook is not an approved book for primary schools in the country. “It must be noted that the book in question is not an approved textbook for schools under the Ghana Education Service,” the statement said.

The classification has received a lot of backlash from social media, with the Vice President of IMANI Ghana, Kofi Bentil, calling for an immediate withdrawal of the books from the primary schools.

The Ministry of Education has however said their investigations have so far revealed that “the infamous book in question appears to be an uncommissioned solo effort by the said author.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the said book has not been taken through the approval processes of the Curriculum Research and Development Division of the Ghana Education Service,” the statement said.

“We can however, confirm that there is only one approved primary 1 textbook titled ‘Natural Science for Primary Schools: Activity-Based Pupils’ Book 1’ jointly authored by Peter Asiedu, Henric Atta Baa-Yeboah and Ebenezer Agyiri Domptey. On page 62 of this particular book, it is indicated that “our head contains the brain which helps us to think.

“The Ministry wishes to advise against associating the Ministry or the Ghana Education Service (GES) with this publication," the statement added.
