More than ten Ghanaian students studying abroad through the Government of Ghana Scholarship were left to fend for themselves after Scholarship Secretariat failed to pay their fees.

However, the matter has now been resolved and the arrears were paid.

The students who are studying in Rome confirmed that their fees were paid on the 23 October. Students who were in need of plane tickets to fly home also confirmed they will be going home.

Meanwhile the Director of the Scholarship Secretariat, Fuseini Lansa on Monday said, “We have not only paid the allowances of the students in Serbia and Macedonia; we are also putting measures in place to ensure that in future, such an unfortunate situation does not recur”.

Fuseini Lansah assured students that they should concentrate on their studies as government are urgently looking into the matter.

It would be recalled that some Ghanaian students under government scholarships in Macedonia pleaded with government to release their subventions.

Close to a year now, these students have not received a dime from the Scholarship Secretariat and the Government of Ghana.

Background

The Daily Graphic on September 24, 2015 reported that some 10 students on the Government of Ghana Scholarship in Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine and Morocco were stranded.

The story said the students were owed allowances for over a year and that those who had completed their courses and were expected in the country by June, 2015 to do their national service could not do so because their plane tickets were not ready.
