Shame Free SHS critics by passing WASSCE – Akufo-Addo tells students

The first batch of the Free SHS policy beneficiaries are currently in second year and will be undertaking the WASSCE next year.

The President believes good results from the pioneering batch of students would shame critics of the policy and encourage more Ghanaians to buy into the policy.

Speaking to teachers and students of the Ntrubuman Senior High School in Breweneasi in the Nkwanta south district as part of his two-day working visit to the Oti Region, he said the Free SHS has come to stay.

“You have a big responsibility, to make sure that this free senior high school concept comes to stay and all Ghanaians buy into it. Those of you who will go next year to take the exams will be the first of the free senior high school generation to take the exams,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“My prayer is that the exams the result of the exams will show that Ghanaians are right to embrace the free senior high school concept. You are the pioneers, don’t let the school down and shame all those people who didn’t want you to have the free senior high school.”

The Free SHS policy was the flagship campaign message of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections and it was rolled out in September 2017.

However, the policy has encountered a number of challenges since being implemented, as the availability of space forced government to adopt a double-track system.

Also, issues have been raised with regards to funding, with some suggesting the government will not be able to sustain the programme in the coming years

Former president John Mahama is also a strong critic of the way the Free SHS was implemented and is on record to have said he will review the Free SHS should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) return to power in 2020.
