Gov't to lift ban on use of mobile phones in senior high schools

Ghana’s Ministry of Education is considering lifting the ban on the use of mobile phones in Senior High Schools [SHS] in the country.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum said the move is to help bridge the gap in ICT education in Ghana.

The government through the Ministry of Education has over the years banned the use of mobile phones in secondary and basic schools, saying that they are a great source of distraction to children in school.

But Mr Adutwum said the Ministry is now considering lifting the ban to among others increase the knowledge base of students in ICT education.

"Some schools don't have computers but the students have mobile phones at home so why wouldn't we allow them to bring the phones to the school to help ICT learning," he said.

The Minister further believed that lifting of the ban will enable students to use their mobile phones in doing their assignments and other studies for improved academic performance.
